Our namesake, Abraham Lincoln, is properly revered as a great President. He was also a realistic politician, who recognized that translating Republican principles into electoral victories required a strong Republican Party. In a speech to a Republican group in 1859, he concluded with: "Stand by your principles... and victory complete and permanent is sure at the last."
